Hi Sharlene! Could you tell us what it was like to be new at Jayway?
Hi there - Of course! I started in February 2017. What I first noticed when I joined was the approach people have towards any newcomers: It is a very welcoming environment, and everyone is approachable and ready to help you out - You don’t feel alone! The first month, people came up to me to discover what I could do, but also what I wanted to do in my personal development.
So, what you do in your day-to-day job?
Currently I am strolling in the React & Node.js world and it is exciting because it's a different paradigm. I have done full stack, but anything that challenges me to deconstruct my experience and force me to go out of my comfort zone is fun for me! Right now I am in a project for one of our biggest clients as a front- and back-end developer.
What is your favourite thing about working at Jayway?
Competence-days and Competence-weekends are my favourite part of Jayway! Here we develop our individual competencies. Jayway allows people to advance their skills, and you get to define what technical area you want to develop, and get involved with. It is possible to shift direction according to what competence area you want to work with, which means you never get bored or stuck in the same path.
Jayway is a dream world for a developer.
Can you describe what the "Jayway culture" means to you?
On the environment
Jayway has a nurturing environment and has a technically-driven work culture. The division of different studios makes it feel like you have a small family, even though we are 200+ employees across 5 offices. Seniors are always open for discussion and comments, and you never feel afraid to voice your opinion.
About the people
The mentality of people at Jayway is undoubtedly one of my favourite things. I feel relaxed here, even under pressure. Everyone is supporting each other, so that no pressure is unbearable. I find that a very unique and comforting force.
Do you have any final comments?
Advice to others
I really regret not starting here sooner! I Got to know Jayway through a friend’s husband who has been working here for years. For 4 years he said to me: “You should join Jayway” but I didn’t take him seriously. My recommendation to others is: Don’t think about anything else - just join! You won’t regret it.
