Creating an engaging web experience on mobile touch screen devices. And while at it, rebuild the infrastructure by piloting a new CMS and transforming to a Cloud-hosted environment.
When launching the new mobile website Touch
targeted at handsets sporting touch screens, Sony Ericsson grabbed
the opportunity to make several major improvements to their
infrastructure, such as employing a new Content Management System
(CMS).
With the help of Jayway, Sony Ericsson was able to make all this
a reality. All while meeting a very hard deadline - the Chistmas
trade.
Engaging customers
One of the primary goals of the Touch site is to provide an
engaging user experience. Naturally, this requires rich content
which comes at a price in communication overhead. This is an issue
which many commercial Content Management Systems do not handle
optimally.
By employing Jayway's deep knowledge and competence in the
technologies of modern web development (such as HTML5,
JavaScript/JQuery, CSS3) and creating a highly efficient cache
scheme, the project was able to make this user experience come
alive, on all devices.
¿Habla español?
For a global actor like Sony Ericsson, web presence takes on a
new level of complexity; adressing each customer in their native
tounge. A major challenge was to create an efficient infrastructure
being able to juggle 80 local sites avaialble in 40 languages, all
while maintaining the possibility of making global changes.
The solution based on the Liferay CMS meets the stated requirements as
well as fulfilling the needs in content workflow of a large and
complex marketing organization such as Sony Ericsson.
Moving into the cloud
Costs of hosting web services are considerable. Building and
operating racks of servers with your own personnell is an expensive
and inflexible proposition.
The infrastructure solution developed by Jayway is fully based
on the Amazon Web Services and scales
automatically in response to the traffic reaching the site. Need to
scale up the number of servers over lunch? No problem! No need to
even lift a finger.
